Alex Edmans is Professor of Finance at London Business School. He is an expert in corporate finance (corporate governance, executive compensation, mergers and acquisitions, investment/growth/innovation), corporate social responsibility, practical investment strategies, and behavioural finance.
Alex has a unique combination of deep academic rigour and practical business experience. He graduated top of his class from Oxford University and then worked for Morgan Stanley in investment banking (London) and fixed income sales and trading (New York). After a PhD in Finance from MIT Sloan as a Fulbright Scholar, he became a finance professor at Wharton, where he was granted tenure. He won 14 teaching awards in six years, served as Faculty Graduation Speaker to the MBA class of 2014, and was the highest-rated finance professor in the MBA program before his departure. At LBS, he won the MBA Class of 2016 teaching award for the highest-rated professor school-wide (voted by the first-year class), and served as Faculty Orientation Speaker to the MBA class of 2017.
Alex’s research has been published in the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Review of Financial Studies, and covered by the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, The Economist, and The Times. He has presented to the Bank of England, Deutsche Bank, Federal Reserve, Goldman Sachs, IMF, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley, OECD, SEC, and UBS, and been interviewed by Bloomberg, BBC, CNBC, CNN, ESPN, Fox, ITV, NPR, Reuters, Sky News, and Sky Sports. He is a Wall Street Journal “Expert”, a regular contributor to CityAM, and gave a TEDx talk entitled “The Social Responsibility of Business”.
Alex co-led a session on behavioural economics at the 2014 World Economic Forum in Davos. Alex co-invented a solution to the U.S. housing crisis that was named one of the 50 best inventions in 2010 by Time magazine. He also co-invented the idea of paying managers with debt to dissuade excessive risk-taking, which has been implemented by several banks and advocated by policymakers worldwide. He was named a Rising Star in Finance and a Rising Star in Corporate Governance, both for outstanding contributions by a person under 40, and was awarded the Moskowitz Prize for Socially Responsible Investing and the FIR-PRI prize for Finance and Sustainability.
