Árni Páll Árnason, was Iceland’s Minister of Social Affairs and Social Security 2009-2010, responsible for dealing with the social effects of the financial crisis of 2008, such as increased unemployment and spiralling household debt, while at the same time providing unavoidable cuts in social security spending.
He was Minister of Economic Affairs 2010-2011, responsible for co-ordination of the IMF plan, starting a process of financial sector restructuring dealing successfully with unprecedented levels of corporate debt. The Icelandic recovery story – bookmarked by the crisis of 2008 and the finalisation of the IMF programme in 2011 – continues to be a model story of sound economic turnaround, coupled with equitable sharing of the economic burdens of crisis. The IMF described the crisis in 2008 as “the perfect storm”.
From 2013 to 2016 Árni Páll Árnason served as Leader of the Social Democratic Alliance as well as a member of the Presidency of the Party of European Socialists. With a background in diplomacy he has worked on security policy issues as well as EU issues. As a lawyer with European law expertise, he has worked extensively within the separate legal relationship Iceland enjoys with the EU through the EEA-Agreement.
His unique experience makes Árni a speaker offering a wealth of practical and political experience.
