Matt Ridley’s books on science and technology have sold over a million copies, been translated into 30 languages and won several awards. His TED talk: When Ideas Have Sex has been been viewed over two million times. Ridley explains that throughout history, the engine of human progress has been the meeting and mating of ideas to make new ideas. As Viscount Ridley, he was elected to the House of Lords in February 2013. The former chairman of the UK bank Northern Rock prior to the 2008 financial crisis, he is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the Honorary President of Newcastle’s International Centre for Life promoting the advancement of the life sciences.
