Speaker Jamie Bartlett is an author, investigator and researcher focusing on cyber security, privacy online, new political movements, social media analysis and digital cultures. He is a founder director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media for Demos in partnership with The University of Sussex.
His first book The Dark Net, exposed the dark side of and the hidden areas of the internet, particularly the dark web. Jamie presented the BBC 2 documentary series Secrets of Silicon Valley exploring the reality of Silicon Valley’s glittering promise to build a better world, and meeting the people who harnessed social media to change the shape and nature of American politics.
Jamie’s Radicals Chasing Utopia: Inside the Rogue Movements Trying to Change the World was published in May 2017. He explores the individuals, groups and movements that reject the way we live today and asks if political radicals are not the only people who bring revolutionary change to the world. He investigates the hidden corners of the internet, its strange subcultures, and the protagonists that inhabit it – from trolls, Bitcoin miners, political extremists and members of the hacktivists ‘Anonymous’, to pornographers, drug dealers, computer scientists and new neo-Nazis.
Jamie explains how fraud and identity theft keeps evolving and improving, exploiting any weakness and how today’s criminals are creative, consumer focused and innovative. He describes the new technology criminals are starting to employ including blockchain based services and the automation of crime. Crime will soon involve the utilisation of machine learning and techniques such as synthetic and ‘deep-fake’ videos. What might be the next risk vectors?
Jamie Bartlett explains how the internet changes the balance of power in politics and elections. His latest book, The People vs Tech: How the internet is killing democracy (and how we save it) was nominated on the 2019 Orwell Prize longlist for Political Writing.
In 2019 Jamie wrote and presented the BBC hit podcast The Missing Cryptoqueen investigating the largest ever cryptocurrency scam, OneCoin, and its enigmatic missing founder. Now as Facebook turns 20 years old, Jamie Bartlett uncovers how social media led to the creation a new digital elite and describes how their platforms came to dominate society and to control what we consume in BBC’s The Gatekeepers. The series runs as a podcast and on BBC Radi0 4.
Jamie is available for offline and online engagements. Since the start of the pandemic Jamie has been pioneering bespoke virtual conference content combining a keynote talk with edited archive & video footage. Using professional grade equipment & producers, the result is an entire bespoke ‘mini-documentary’ – a new way of delivering business content online.
