MENULord Mark Malloch-Brown served as United Kingdom Minister of State for Africa, Asia and the UN. He has held the position of United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Vice President at the World Bank and has served as Chief of Staff, UN Secretary General for the United Nations.
He is now the Chairman of SGO and its branch Smartmatic, a major provider of democratic election technology. Mark Malloch-Brown sits on many private boards, including Kerogen, an independent equity fund specialising in oil and gas), Investec, and Seplat, both listed on stock markets internationally. After leading the EMEA practice for the global business firm FTI Consulting, he became Senior Special Adviser for the company.
Malloch-Brown was Kofi Annan’s right hand man at the UN, serving as his Chief of Staff and then becoming Deputy Secretary-General. He led the UN’s international development efforts working as Administrator of the UNDP for a period of six years. Later, he served as Minister of State for the Foreign Office, covering the regions of Africa and Asia and being knighted in 2007 for his international contribution.
Originally trained as a journalist for The Economist, he was a member of Gordon Brown’s cabinet between 2007 and 2009. Additionally, he has been the vice-chairman for the World Economic Forum and for George Soros’ Investment Funds and his Open Society Institute. He also worked as vice-president for the World Bank.
He sits on many non-profit boards such as the International Crisis Group, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, the Open Society Foundation, the Centre for Global Development and serves as the former Chair of the Royal Africa Society.
Malloch-Brown is also a Distinguished Practitioner of the highly respected Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University and a former distinguished fellow at the Yale Centre for the Study of Globalisation.
In 2005, Mark Malloch Brown was among the 100 most influential individuals in the world according to Times Magazine. In 2011, Penguin published his book The Unfinished Global Revolution. He currently writes, broadcasts and lectures on many of our greatest global challenges, on the world’s worst trouble spots, reforming the UN, corporate profitability and about his own life, professional experiences and leadership management.
