Rosa Vasquez Espinoza
Specialist Speaker Dr. Rosa Vásquez Espinoza speaks on nature, adventure, sustainability and our relationship with our natural world. She is a chemical biologist, conservationist, TV personality, National Geographic Explorer and an award-winning artist.
Of Peruvian-Andean and Amazonian descent, Rosa grew up learning much about traditional medicine from her grandmother in their own backyard’s ‘natural pharmacy’. Today, Rosa travels to the most extreme environments on earth searching for the tiniest heat-loving microbes in order to help to create big beneficial changes in our world. Rosa’s PhD research at the University of Michigan has led to the discovery of new microbial-derived antibiotics and biocatalysts for innovative green and sustainable chemistry. Her work has now been featured extensively in Forbes, on ABC’s Tamron Hall, on Science Friday’s 20 Top Stories of 2020, and by the National Association of Science Writers, ASBMB, National Geographic, Andina Perú, and many more.
Rosa created MicroAmazon, a project to explore the micro-world of the Amazon rainforest in collaboration with local experts. Currently, she is investigating the Peruvian Boiling River and its microbes, and Amazonian stingless bees and their medicinal honey through exploratory science and impactful storytelling. Her goals are to expand our knowledge of Amazon biodiversity, strengthen conservation policy, empower local communities and students, and inspire others to follow. Rosa Vásquez Espinoza is the recipient of the 2020 American Chemical Society CAS Leadership Award.
Rosa has now participated in international campaigns with National Geographic Partners and Disney on the recycling of common plastics in collaboration with PepsiCo, on greater sustainability and natural products in the beauty industry with Garnier/L’Oréal, and on water-based field exploration in collaboration with SeaDoo.
Rosa Vásquez Espinoza speaks on conservation and sustainability, on education and women in STEM. She is a superb choice as a contemporary speaker on exploration, adventure and leadership and resilience and as a motivational speaker in English and/or Spanish.
