Anders Tegnell

Speaker Dr Anders Tegnell is a globally recognized epidemiologist and public health expert known for leading Sweden’s unique public health strategy during the COVID pandemic.

As Sweden’s State Epidemiologist from 2013 to 2022, Anders Tegnell became the public face of a national response that emphasized long-term sustainability, public trust, and minimal restrictions. Controversial at the time, Sweden’s response differed greatly from the majority of the world and, famously, Dr Tegnell, was the man behind the country’s no‑lockdown coronavirus policy.

With more than thirty years of experience in infectious disease control and health systems Anders Tegnell’s career includes projects in both national and global settings including mission assignments with the World Health Organization incliuding the Ebola outbreak in Zaire. Within the Swedish public health system, he has led responses to major outbreaks, including the H1N1 pandemic.

Dr. Tegnell holds a medical degree and PhD in Infectious Diseases from Linköping University, a Master’s degree in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and has authored or co-authored numerous scientific publications.

Known for his calm and data-driven communication, Dr. Tegnell has become a prominent speaker on topics including pandemic preparedness, public health strategy, risk communication and resilience.
