Biography

Sam McAlister has built a career persuading powerful people to say yes when all their instincts tell them to say no.

Over more than a decade at the BBC, most notably as a Senior Interviews Producer at Newsnight, she became one of British broadcasting’s most formidable negotiators, trusted to secure the interviews, access and difficult conversations that other people thought impossible. Her work sat at the intersection of journalism, strategy, psychology and persuasion, often involving institutions and individuals whose reputations, careers and public standing were on the line.

Most people see major television interviews only once the cameras start rolling. Sam’s career was built on everything that has to happen before that moment. Her exclusives ranged from presidents and prime ministers including Bill Clinton, Justin Trudeau and Benjamin Netanyahu to technology leaders such as Elon Musk, Sheryl Sandberg and Eric Schmidt, as well as some of the most controversial public figures of recent decades, including Julian Assange and Stormy Daniels. But the interview that transformed her public profile was, of course, the 2019 Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew.

At the time, the Duke of York faced mounting scrutiny over his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Convincing Buckingham Palace that a forensic television interview could repair his public standing required months of negotiation, persistence and strategic judgement. The interview instead became one of the most catastrophic public relations disasters in modern British history, watched around the world and analysed for years afterwards as a case study in reputation, media handling and institutional miscalculation.

Sam later chronicled the story in her bestselling book Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews, a candid, witty and unusually revealing account of how elite journalism, power and negotiation really operate behind closed doors. In 2021, she left Newsnight to write it, backing her own judgement at a moment when the safer option would have been to stay. The book became both a critical and commercial success, and subsequently the basis for two major screen adaptations: the Netflix feature film Scoop, with Billie Piper portraying Sam, and A Very Royal Scandal, a three-part Amazon Prime drama retelling the same events from another perspective. Both brought Sam’s story, and the questions it raises about power, accountability and media, to a truly global audience.

Sam hadn’t arrived in journalism through the usual broadcasting routes. Raised outside the traditional media establishment, she had trained and practised as a criminal defence barrister before moving into television. As she has said in interviews, the thing people notice when they meet her is that she is “not very BBC” and that outsider quality was never a liability. The job, as she has put it, was never about calling the people whose numbers everybody already had. It was about finding a way to reach the ones nobody else could get to. That directness, resilience and emotional intelligence became central to her success as a producer and negotiator and remain central to everything she brings to the stage.

Alongside her work at Newsnight, Sam became known within British broadcasting as one of the BBC’s leading interview producers, helping shape some of the corporation’s most significant political and current affairs journalism of the past decade.

Her memoir Scoops was praised for its honesty, wit and unusually revealing insight into modern journalism and the psychology of power. The Netflix adaptation Scoop brought that story to an international audience, becoming one of the platform’s most talked-about films of 2024 and introducing millions of viewers worldwide to the behind-the-scenes reality of the interview that had already changed the course of a royal career. A Very Royal Scandal, the companion Amazon Prime series, extended that reach further still; together, the two productions ensured that the story Sam lived and wrote became one of the defining media narratives of the decade.

Today, Sam combines speaking, broadcasting and writing with her work as a Visiting Senior Fellow in Practice at the London School of Economics, where she teaches negotiation and communication strategy.
