Biography

Rob Bell grew up as the son of a Scout leader, which probably explains more about him than his engineering degree does.

The outdoors, problem-solving and a desire to understand how things worked shaped his childhood long before they became a career. He studied Mechanical Engineering with French at the University of Bath, graduating with a Master’s degree before beginning work in sustainability and the public sector. Engineering remained his first discipline, but he quickly discovered he was as interested in explaining complex ideas as he was in understanding them.

That combination eventually led him into television. He first came to wider public attention presenting Engineering Giants for the BBC, a series that explored some of the world’s largest and most complex machines — Boeing 747s, North Sea oil platforms, the kind of engineering that most people interact with daily without ever seeing the scale of what is involved. The programme established an approach that has defined his career: taking technical subjects seriously while making them genuinely accessible.

Since then he has presented documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, Discovery, the History Channel and the Travel Channel, covering military history, infrastructure, science, transport and exploration.

Away from television, Rob has raised more than £100,000 for charities supporting children with physical and mental disabilities through his endurance challenges, including the seven continents marathon. He continues to champion STEM education alongside his broadcasting and speaking work, partnering with businesses, schools and professional institutions to make the case that engineering is one of the most human things people do.
