Will Hutton

Will Hutton is a writer, weekly columnist and former editor-in-chief for The Observer.

He is one of the pre-eminent economics commentators in the country, regularly asked to advise senior business figures and comment in international media. He is currently Principal of Hertford College Oxford and Chair of the Big Innovation Centre, an initiative from The Work Foundation.  Between 2000 to 2008 he was chief executive of The Work Foundation, the UK’s most influential voice on work and organisation issues.

His career began in the city, as a stockbroker and investment analyst before moving to the BBC, where he worked both on radio and TV as a producer and reporter. He was economics correspondent for Newsnight from 1983 to 1988. Prior to joining The Work Foundation, Will spent four years as editor-in-chief of The Observer, for which he continues to write a closely-watched weekly column.

As an author his early works included The State We’re In, The State to Come, The Stakeholding Society: Writings on Politics and Economics and The World We’re In.

Released in 2007 The Writing On The Wall: China and the West in the 21st Century examines Western concerns and responses to the rise of China. It looks at the emerging global division of labour, and argues that the Chinese economy is running up against a set of increasingly unsustainable contradictions that could have a damaging universal fallout. He has published two books Them and Us: Changing Britain – Why We Need a Fair Society was published in 2010 and How Good We Can Be: Ending the Mercenary Society and Building a Great Country of which comments on the current economic climate in the UK and adds a critique of our current system of finance and whether it is time to replace it.

Will is a governor of the London School of Economics, a visiting professor at the University of Manchester Business School and the University of Bristol as well as a visiting fellow at Mansfield College, Oxford. He is a trustee of the Scott Trust, a fellow of the Sunningdale Institute and a member of the Design Council’s Millennium Commission. In 2004, Will was invited by the European Commission to join a High Level Group on the mid-term review of the Lisbon Strategy and act as its “rapporteur” for the final report.

In 2011 he was appointed as Principal of Hertford College, Oxford, and sits on the European Advisory Board of Princeton University Press.
