MENUTom Bieling is a design researcher, author and consultant, developing research and teaching projects in the area of human-computer-interaction, with a strong focus on social innovation, inclusion and diversity.
Tom is a visiting professor at the German University in Cairo since 2011 and has been lecturing at international universities (e.g. Mumbai, São Paulo, Basel, Milan, Portland, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Budapest, Eindhoven or Rotterdam).
He is a regular expert on TV and Radio programmes (including 3 SAT Nano, ZDF.info, RBB, SWR2, Deutschlandfunk – Forschung aktuell) and in print or web media (including ARCH+, design report, Tagesspiegel, weave, Horizont, The Atlantic, Page), where his areas of expertise include social and political dimensions of design, technology and media, as well as pop-cultural phenomena.
Tom’s career has included founding the Insitute for Applied Fantasies, co-founding the Design Research Network and editing Designabilities (Design Research Journal for social, cultural and political Discourse, Transformation & Activism). In his previous work as communication- and interaction- and user experience designer he worked with international clients including Daimler-Chrysler, T-Mobile USA, Deutsche Telekom Laboratories and the Dokumentationszentrum für Popkultur. He is a frequent member of international design juries and research advisory boards. His work has been exhibited in New York, Vienna, Munich or Sheffield and received multiple awards.
Tom is a PhD candidate at the Design Research Lab at Berlin University of the Arts and a member of 1. FC KÖLN, the world’s most carnevalistic football team.
