Árni Páll Árnason is an experienced career diplomat and politician with extensive expertise in the law of the European Union. He is a former Cabinet Minister and Social Democratic Party Leader in Iceland and has unique international legal expertise in the EEA Agreement and EFTA membership, including of the different options the UK has in gaining access to the Single Market following Brexit.
Mr Árnason was a Minister for Social Affairs and Social Security and later Minister for Economic Affairs, following the deep financial crisis in Iceland. The measures taken under his leadership on welfare issues and financial sector restructuring proved vital to the economic and banking turnaround in Iceland. They were acclaimed by the IMF as breaking new ground worldwide in economic recovery policy making.
In June 2017, he was commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers to conduct a strategic review of the Nordic Welfare Model, under a mandate from the Nordic Social Ministers.
In 2019 Árni Páll Árnason was appointed Deputy Director of the EEA and Norway Grants Financial Mechanism Office in Brussels and now heads the Country and Bilateral Cooperation Department of the Agency.
