Sam Wilkin

Sam Wilkin specializes in political risk – the ways in which geopolitics impacts the economy and business, a crucial topic in an age of trade wars and rising polarization. His latest book is History Repeating: Why Populists Rise and Governments Fall (Profile, 2018). Business Standard praised the book as “packed with hilarious accounts of seminal historical events, some redoubtable women and men, and solid insight into political instability;” BusinessLine called it a “magisterial account.” Sam is also the coauthor, with Marvin Zonis, Dan Lefkovitz, and Joseph Yackley of Risk Rules: How Local Politics Threatens the Global Economy (Agate, 2012). The Harvard Business Review called the book “powerful” and “the first [geopolitics] book for business people that presents its case with such clarity and insight.”

Sam Wilkin is senior advisor to Oxford Economics, one of the world’s foremost global economic forecasting and research consultancies, a senior advisor to Oxford Analytica, a geopolitical analysis firm that counts among its clients more than twenty-five world governments, and a visiting fellow at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs.

Sam’s articles and op-eds cover topics ranging from reform of financial regulation (for the Harvard Business Review) to Microsoft’s international strategy (for Barron’s) to Turkey’s EU accession prospects (for the Boston Globe). He previously served as head of business research at Oxford Economics, associate director of the consultancy practice at Oxford Analytica, as head of political risk consulting for Aon Trade Credit and as director of country analysis for Marvin Zonis & Associates. He received his M.A. in international relations from the University of Chicago and B.A. in economics from Eckerd College, and was the 2004 alumni fellow for Eckerd College.
