MENUMisha Glenny speaker on organised crime and cybercrime, author of McMafia.
Journalist, author and broadcaster Misha Glenny speaks on organised crime and the increasingly complex challenges of twenty-first century cyber-security. A Digital Security Journalist of the Year, Misha is expert on the dark world where criminality meets geopolitics.
Misha Glenny learned his trade as BBC chief correspondent for Central Europe. This was at a time that included the breakup of the former Yugoslavia and the horrors that followed. He won a Sony Gold Award for his work and published three books on central and Eastern Europe including The Balkans.
His non-fiction writing has proved so impactful that his McMafia was adapted to become a major BBC television series. In the book Misha contends that organised crime now makes up around fifteen per cent of global GDP.
In 2020 Covid-19 and lockdown has offered even greater opportunities for the ever increasing cyber criminal sector. According to the UK National Crime Agency in the first two weeks of lockdown alone, they identified eighty-thousand fraudulent Covid-19 websites, selling everything from fake and non-existent PPE to snake-oil remedies.
As author of DarkMarket: How Hackers Became the New Mafia Misha Glenny explains these risks and dangers and how business, government, and individuals can fight back and become truly resilient.
