Defence Speakers: defence in the twenty-first century is everything from nuclear deterrence to asymmetrical warfare. Whilst new technologies including cyber-warfare and drone and swarm capabilities look like becoming ever more part of the toolkit, at the same time ships, aircraft, and infantry and marine boots on the ground remain fundamental. Assets such as the Lockheed Martin F35 now come with a price tag of between $80m and $110m per aircraft. And a US Navy Ford Class aircraft carrier costs $13 billion. The challenge faced by nations is the affordability of advanced tech whilst dealing with threats from informal and non-state actors who are working on minimal budgets.
